Boxborough and surrounding towns enjoy a wealth of local produce and regional foods. These sources can be fresher and more nutritious than products that take days to arrive in our stores. Also, eating local foods can help reduce the emissions involved in transportation.
Boxborough and Acton started the Acton-Boxborough Farmers Market in summer 2009. The market will be held in 2010 during the summer and fall (mid-July to early November):
When: Sundays, 10:00am-1:00pm
Where: Pearl Street in West Acton Center.
Vendors sell fresh vegetables, fruits, berries, honey, eggs, meat, and specialty goods such as breads, cheeses, and handmade soaps. In addition to local and organic foods, the market features music, the work of area artisans, community education, and children’s activities. Check the market website for more information or contact Jen Taylor.
If you’d like to grow your own food but don’t have suitable land, Boxborough has a Community Garden on Middle Road which offers 20 x 30-foot plots for a modest fee. Phone Frank Roth at 978-263-2400 for information. Also, the Boxborough Agricultural Commission is working to represent, enhance, and sustain agriculture, farming, and related activities within our town.
For food-related books and other publications, see Local Food Literature. In addition to eating local food, you can patronize eco-friendly restaurants. Several in Massachusetts, mostly in the Boston Metro area, have been certified by the Green Restaurant Association.
